Listening to and creating sound

I was listening to a great record from last year by Kevin Saunderson and the musicality is evident in the way particular sounds have a time and a place in the structure. When I am making sound for every hundred files made, probably five are resolved. Once I try to make music the whole thing goes wrong. Currently I am just making paired back sounds with minimal samples.

Also even though I love music parts of it can bother me, although I know a certain beat and sound has a place at times I just want the bits I like. Although with music you need all of the textures and the bits you don’t like make the bits you like more appealing. So the whole structure unifies with all of these differences and parts. I was listening to Ultravox and Visage and just loved the bare beats that sit in the background.

Recently I was structuring some parts of a sound work and enjoyed making a clear beat that moved into other sounds but overall the complexity just wasn’t quite right. Then I just went back to the core beats and left less samples that at the very least were not really going anywhere. I am not a musician so I can’t really get to that musical level and I love the direct nature of what I am doing.

I suppose I am at least finding the sounds interesting. I kind of like a kick drum with a slight bass feel that isn’t too loud bouncing off something percussive that also has a soft edge to it. With midi sounds I like a tone that I will fade in and fade out at a slightly lower volume just to break the to and fro of the beat. I feel like I am building to something very slowly but whatever it is, it isn’t musical. Some sounds have made me think of an exchange of machine gun fire.
