I was showing someone at work the ‘undefined 4’ magazine and they said ‘is this stuff real?’ I said yeah it is photos of real art on the streets from today to 30 years ago. They were a bit shocked. They know nothing about graffiti and have that knee jerk in the matrix understanding of graffiti being bad so they never looked into it.
Over the past few years my attitude to what art can and should do has changed. I figured I needed to mix the cartoon reality with the hand touch. They need to coexist and complement each other.
The human hand is hidden from the world. What you can call anti-human. Even graffiti today has a look where it could be straight out of a computer. I think we no longer love the human touch so we no longer love ourselves. This is the problem of mass production and capitalist perfection. It is an affliction of the soul.
Chinese calligraphy is the pinnacle of what it is to exist. A moment of communication captured that becomes a memento. So even though I mix the graphic with the undefined mark I am trying to marry this difference as we live within technology exclusively. Yet we can never really disconnect from the eternity of nature.
A lot of people argue that the technological world is natural. I can partly agree that without nature it can’t exist and so it is connected but that is where Chinese calligraphy argues of the humility of existence. Its connection to spontaneous decisions and forms can’t have the same expressive force. This is human. Sure a robot could be designed to do the same thing but it isn’t the same thing.
