I wrote an essay circa 2016 that was like a pamphlet about graffiti I put for free on IBooks. It should still be there. Earlier this year I made it available in a physical version. It is called ‘Reading the World’ and I have a link to my publications in my socials bio. What I wrote about amongst other things was how nobody can really see graffiti. It is more experienced than seen, it is hard at times to know where any part begins or ends. I recently showed someone a publication I made and they said: “where am I supposed to look?” It was just a massive amount of visual noise and chaos. As an artist who produces this type of noisy work I am always amazed at artists who have a clear concise message. Cleon Peterson is a good example. The work I am producing is definitely retrospective in a lot of ways and there are no clear messages. It is abstract, undefined, and largely unplanned. There are similarities to mark making, the aerosol is clearly displayed as aerosol as opposed to virtuoso effects. Definitely not a winning strategy but something I have pursued over decades. Although technique only follows the needs at hand. In a way there is a hope I can abandon any clear techniques, instead relying on the moment and opportunities that present themselves.
