Ease tensions

We went to a Canton inspired restaurant in Sichuan and the owner had a sign saying that Japanese customers were not welcome. There have been tensions for months between the Japanese and Chinese governments. My trainer said to the restaurant owner that she shouldn’t have the sign up in case a Japanese gangster sabotages her restaurant.

She became concerned, it was sage advice as you are best not publicising your intentions. People do take note and even though she is somewhat justified in her position depending on who’s side you agree with, you only make yourself a target. Taking sides is natural and my own opinion is the Japanese Prime Minister has been somewhat uncouth. Yet the ordinary citizen is another matter.

Business is another thing altogether, you can in business have totally different values but still have a win-win relationship. Also there are a few Japanese in China doing business and so forth. Best to make friends where you can and try to ease tensions.
