So you have your small victories. People in the Sydney graffiti scene always complain that the scene is unprofessional. When ‘While the City Sleeps’ was released it was definitely not a professional book in that it had clear biases and incorrect information through it. But to me that isn’t something to be criticised because the most important thing is that it exists. We will inevitably see a professional publication come through in Sydney but it may be more specialised information on certain Sydney writers. This again isn’t an issue in that at least something will exist eventually. Whether it benefits a few people or many doesn’t really matter. I made my publications just so something would exist. No dates, no names, just archives of what I managed to photograph and I am not a professional photographer.
To me the most important thing is they exist. I am not waiting for Sydney to change, it never will. I remember on my last journey to Melbourne in 1995 I was blown away that architects, designers, fine artists and graffiti artists were sharing creative spaces. I couldn’t believe it. In Sydney graffiti writers would have been taxing wallets, causing drama or in general being ‘damaged’ individuals. But that is just what Sydney is like; you have to live in reality. You have dudes with major photo collections just saying how bad Sydney is. How basic other publications are, or how biased they are, just droning on and on. For God’s sake just make something. Even if it’s shit, please just let it go. Sydney will probably be professional when everyone in the scene is dead and the robots have taken over.
