When I first bought an iMac after being solely dependent on Linux for years I thought it was heaven, which really the ease of use is incredible but I have never really been able to do serious work on my Mac. I like it for entertainment and would just feel distracted when using it. It has been four years and the dream run is over as it crashes more and doesn’t perform as well. The normal thing to do would be to buy a shiny new Mac and be happy all over again but the hardware is actually really powerful. So I give it six months and I will run Linux on it. I like Mac’s they are great machines and OSX is pretty great but the upgrade cycle and overall performance in the long term is not so good. If you are happy to upgrade every four or five years get a Mac but if you can’t stand seeing powerful machines turn into bricks install Linux. I bought a new machine recently and put Linux on it for less than half the price of a macbook air and it is better especially for long term use and has more storage by far but it depends what you want it for. Linux has the longest support cycle of any OS, when you upgrade it performs too so win win. I have read about single boot options as the machine is almost unsupported by Apple it won’t be getting a firmware upgrade again so I will turn the partition into msdos and single boot Ubuntu most likely as it is derived from Debian and supports most hardware. I am taking my time on it because I need to check some software out like Krita and video editing which is what my Mac has been doing on occasion.
