The premium magazines I have been making are a joy to make. I wouldn’t say much is happening sales wise. I have so far lost money but the way I am approaching it this year is to keep the sales only online. Even if I sell them online I make barely any money but I don’t have to print any so I am not out of pocket. I can print some for myself and a couple of friends or just give them randomly and that’s it.
So far though the online sales are at zero, but I have a big surprise sometime later in the year. What I love about it is how much people will want it. Although I would say only aficionados would want it but it will only be available online. I will only print three copies and that is for two friends only. The job to get this particular project off the ground will take a bit of time and it’s more about being methodical.
Nothing is ever guaranteed and so I am glad to try and escape the online world with physical objects. One friend who bought a copy said that the magazines were timeless because there are no dates, no chronology and if there were dates you would bring all of your assumptions about that year. I totally agree, I just wanted photos that you could flip through. The lack of editing was ideal. I didn’t tailor the photos to the book.
My new series ‘undefined’ is like a way to make smaller collections that cover a lot of ground in a small way. It is somewhat loose and I can’t wait to see the prints in my hands. The way I look at it, only a select few are serious collectors of graffiti books. These are going to build in importance over the years. Yet let’s see if we can get through the next few years of uncertainty. The world is getting somewhat worse in the same way it has always been.
