curiosity

It’s always interesting meeting people and talking to them. I sometimes have quite revered artists come into my work. People who are financially successful artists and are sought after. One person in particular has been in a few times. Initially getting materials for their large scale artworks. Kind of sculptural paintings, they are big works and meant to be features of mostly well designed spaces. They are luxurious features for wealthy clients.

He is very approachable and recently he was saying how we are spirits who come into bodies and we only have one life so it should be an adventure at the very least. A couple of decades ago he said he was doing graffiti in Spain. He said he had good memories of various missions and fun times. I had seen him featured in upmarket advertising about Sydney’s elite artists a few months back.

I always try to see what people are up to, I am known to be curious. Yet mostly people are too busy to make much of a response and I was surprised that he offered to get together for a painting session. It is going to be a legal spot and I know he is a very busy person with a lot on so I am kind of even more curious now to see what he does with a spray can. That’s it I am known to be curious and I am approachable.

Sometimes when people follow me on social platforms, regardless of how good or bad I think their work is, I always go and look at their work. If they make the effort to look at my work and follow even if I don’t like what they do I will follow them. My curiosity trumps my taste in most cases because I feel like I am just one voice of many. So if I follow someone, normally I am curious rather than into their work. Then if they don’t follow back I will analyse their output and then disengage.

Curiosity has its drawbacks like anything, I spend a lot of time with books for example that have nothing to do with my expertise or main interests but I want to understand things that are outside of my skills and knowledge. It can be hard and sometimes I expect people to be the same. Although most people don’t even have the faintest idea of what they are into. So I will reward curiosity when it comes. It is rare for it to go both ways and in a lot of ways it is a problem I can live with.
