When the grid goes down

Remembered a film theory lecturer in my uni days being asked if a certain film art movement was just a fashion. He said yes it was a fashion and that sums up the art world in a lot of ways. All you can hope for if you’re past the fashion used by date is that what you do is so obscure and abandoned it can become yours.

When my art for example finds its way into other cultural settings the interpretations are not what I ever expected. So many things are tied into a period, a fashion, a moment and a culture. Then they just make no sense to anybody except people with experience and knowledge of western art history.

What makes things even worse is that not many people want to get into debt just so they can understand art through the lens of art institutions. You are left with the mess we have today but what a great mess it is. Also you have commercial pressures, research pressures, such as can your art apply to medicine or medical therapy?

What is pure art? Does it exist anymore? Yes everything does exist to some extent but what do you need to make it happen even if it has nowhere to go? How does it become useful? Can your art get a job? Maybe if you build robots and artists do but if you were trying to get an art contraption into satellite orbit that’s just another problem and there are solutions. Not many but they exist.

When I do what I do I don’t know why I bother but it is therapy, it is kind of daring because I am like an alien in the future trying to communicate. Even if nobody is listening, some people are listening but even if it makes you think, why not see things differently again? If the culture I was part of has departed and is gone forever don’t I have a responsibility to add to the noise?

I feel like everything is just noise now, as some people have described it, the social media world is like a cage fighting ring. Most people aren’t even on it and they are doing things on other levels, who has the time? There is so much going on, so many people making comebacks, there is the hyper technical, the Lo-fi stuff. What if it all changes which it always does, what will be left of it? It is like the group ‘Public Enemy’ album ‘When the grid goes down’. Maybe art isn’t the issue, it could come down to survival.
