When I go to see art, art that coaxes thoughts of exploration and expanse, I remember the piling disasters of the past few decades and the homeless barren welfare less now. When I see art though I don’t feel these ideas diminish art’s import or relevance. Art was never meant to be relevant to everyone. It is curated and even if the cruelty of our current situation was addressed through art that won’t fix the problem. It would be more noise in the system and not address the decline we celebrate as a boon.
Optical art and dry mathematical art from the 20 century acts as a marker of an anti-human trope that plagues Western society. It is born of naturalism as far as the register of natural order dictates mathematical expression. I am in no way saying mathematics is not natural but the need to order a corporate society finds its expression in control through function and that is mathematical. These ideas are celebrated and encouraged. They are also valid artistic expressions with emotions and empathy.
These works can explore colour and complex ideas that find expression in human culture yet what I am getting at is a lack of disorder. You can see it as the pendulum swinging from mid century abstraction but it happens exactly as the international style of corporate globalism takes hold in the late 60s. The “arrogance” of the twin towers marking the Imperialism set forth after the Second World War finds its expression in the dominant art of those times. Yet today in the current climate nearly everything seems like a distraction but that is a simplification.
The colonial, imperial and mediated present only distracts from the complexities of disorder and human thought. We need to filter the complexity with artificial/superficial intelligence that leaves human thought behind. The march of mass control after decades of fashionable changes that are supposed to be part of provenance seem empty gestures as suffering takes hold of the oppressed not only abroad but in our own backyard. The industry of war and control of money and power is inherent in every institution to some extent. Even disorder won’t fix it but will inevitably break it.
The true disorder is corruption and manipulation of currencies, yet it is planned, orchestrated and tightly controlled. All of this has a human hand involved yet today artificial intelligence is also present. AI will only do what the elites want in the end and the country that has dominant AI will control the world. The disorder I want to see is the autonomous control of races, entities and groups in a world that leaves exploitation behind. The autonomous regions of China that encourage self determination would be a better system than the welfare state created around marginalised groups in Australia since the 70s.
