KOC crew

I remember back in the early 90s, maybe 93 or 94 when the KOC crew started taking over Sydney. I remember I was a bit worn down at the time, I had started art school in 93 and I was pretty tired of the Sydney graffiti scene. I had been at it since late 86. In 94 I went to Melbourne and then went back to Sydney and lived in Hornsby for a few months. I thrashed Hornsby with throw ups and tags, I did a few pieces but I only have one photo of a decent work I did most of the stuff was never photographed.

Basically I had signed out of the hardcore train scene and in some ways seeing KOC crew really going hard with styles Sydney wasn’t ready for was a moment for people to reassess Sydney graffiti. I wasn’t ready for it, I was trying to escape it and go quietly into street graffiti and learn about fine arts. I think things had been quite predictable at least from where I was standing. The drunken bravado paradigm had shifted a notch or two, new styles, people going big, every surface was taken advantage of, go hard or go home but with creative flair.
