The reason technology is addictive is because it emits a range of energies, they are low level but stimulating enough. Whether light or sound the energies in many forms connect directly. These energies are actually damaging and can’t satisfy human needs as well as natural alternatives. It could be argued that any energy even if natural can be damaging. Yet the way we engage with energy is probably the best way to understand the problem of artificially generated stimulation.
The way we interact and are stimulated by any energy is key to understanding the problem. The energy from the sun can be damaging yet overall it is a catalyst for growth and the solar system relies on it. Light from a device though won’t give you energy but rather takes energy from you. Artificial systems don’t fully energise or catalyse growth in any shape or form. They require energy and attention for a symbolic interaction that is augmented. They require your effort to keep them charged and in basic working order.
You can’t expect a real connection with technology because it is artifice. It is pretending to be many augmented things yet you can communicate although a book requires less energy from you other than holding it. It is passive technology rather than active technology. Active technology is instant yet requires many industries to exist at all. Overall it could be argued that all of this artifice and its web of connections seems like a great place to lose yourself in but reality will always be much more complex and giving. It is a real connection that will always sustain you.
