I was talking to a young friend the other day and she said she didn’t believe in God, I am in the same boat but I do believe you need a cosmology of gods, spirits and energies to survive in this world. For one we reflect the universe and the universe reflects us. We have a spirit within us that has been gifted to us by the universe and that is our connection. I believe the lack of a good cosmology weakens people’s ability to read situations and have a fundamental understanding of human nature and the world around us. The spirits, gods and energies are actually humanity in their fundamental form, in that we are part of everything as everything is part of us. The connection is real, that is why sometimes you get a feeling from a certain idea or situation, you feel what is wrong or right about it.

Don’t be naive as to exist in the world is something humans have done for a long time, that is why you need to respect the ideas of Aboriginal Australians or Taoism because they map the connections and interactions between human, sky and earth. The alternatives are not good, such as reliance on random Hollywood movies, American superheroes, or general fake culture. I call it fake culture as to call it out of its lack of real universal connection. You are connected to the universe whether you like it or not. You either need to learn about it or trust your instincts. Then you can live in harmony with the world around you rather than trying to destroy it or deny it.

People who do have a cosmology draw strength from it, they can understand the challenge and connect to the larger world. It can be a big job to deal with what comes our way. We need to keep connected and understand as humans we are quite helpless so we need to hone our connection and open ourselves to connect with nature. Nature will fundamentally protect us but it will undoubtedly challenge us as well.
