Great night at Retro Specs and other musings

Retro Specs drew a good crowd and I enjoyed talking to new people and I hope they keep in touch. It is interesting seeing what people are up to and also sharing your own art there in the gallery. Finally got to exhibit with my good friend Bize, I don’t think we have ever shown together. I remember when he was successfully showing work and he tried to encourage me to exhibit I didn’t feel ready ten plus years ago. Really i had a lot of graffiti going on and I didn’t feel comfortable showing my work in a gallery. How times have changed, there is a lot I want to exhibit now and can look forward to the next show which may be soon I hope. Even when I was painting at uni I never really wanted to show my work and just showed it when I had to. I am kind of glad I didn’t show back then because I didn’t have much to say in a gallery, I can still remember how awkward I felt showing although one show I managed to create a very focused gallery piece and it was appreciated although I never got proper documentaion of it. It was in 1995 and I found a huge piece of ply wood. I painted it in a virtuoso style it was like clouds in red and purple very dramatic and it was very inspired but it actually worked very well and I drew the eye of a curator. It was a bit of a flash in the pan because I didn’t make anything as good except for graffiti pieces after. I think I felt ready for gallery work only three years ago in 2010. Finally I started having the need to create gallery pieces that were sensitive and wouldn’t survive in the streets or just get lost because of the subtle nature of the work. Some of my graffiti work has been quite sensitive too but with various media you can go further and create an experience as good as being immersed in graffiti. With graffiti now I feel as though it is successful if it is bold and bright as well as animated with line detail and shapes to move the eye so I feel as though the portraits can be sensitive in detail and the pieces just raw and slightly gang oriented. When I have made some of my newer pieces I want to engage the person through sound, texture (book), vision isn’t even that important to me but I still want that element which is where the book comes in on the latest work and the canvas is almost unnessary but an element all the same. The touch of the book is very important and I wanted people to feel it and move the pages. I do have some ideas for new painting work. Wanting to do landscapes that are part memory probably drawn from some photos to lend shape and contrast but finished from memory. They will be a little sentimental drawing from the past or an imagined past at any rate, an ideal past dream like. Then I have to show my laptop work with the video sound and synthesised speech, that really is a very good work and it is a little creepy so it will go with some emotive painting in drab colour. Lots to look forward and great to have a successful show on too.
